32ndANNUAL A SIZZLING SUCCESS!
We couldn’t have asked for a better day, either weather wise or participant wise, on Saturday, August 20th at Capitol Hill Community Centre, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1972 model year for Northern Mopars 32nd annual all Mopar Show & Shine! Thanks to Cliff Guinand of Burnouts Garage for the graphic design on our T-shirts. High cloud prevented the sun from scorching the 140 participants, as those beautiful Mopars graced the grass at Capitol Hill. At noon we honoured Bill Higgins, now retired from promoting Meguiars products, with a plaque thanking him for all his years of service to the car community. Have a great and well-deserved retirement Bill, from all your friends at Northern Mopars!
Thanks to the selling efforts of the three amigos from Chestermere (Brett, Rick & Al) our 50/50 total achieved an all-time record with $602.00 going to the winner (Greg Palmer) and the Veterans Association Food Bank of Calgary. We also thank our generous sponsors and club members for donations of many major door prizes, the quality of which you rarely see at other car shows! Please continue to support these sponsors, which are listed in all our bi-monthly newsletters.
We must also thank the many members who contributed to the registration, parking, and selling of show T-shirts, etc. Your efforts are much appreciated by all!
We awarded the top twenty vehicles with a plaque, along with a long-distance award, best project award, favourite 1972 car and truck and best muscle car sponsored by Classic Performance. The participant’s choice Wayne Harris Memorial trophy for Best of Show vehicle was captured by Rob Hundt’s gorgeous 1970 Plymouth Superbird.

Northern Mopars Auto Club staged our 30th annual all Mopar show & shine on Saturday, August 17th at the Capitol Hill Community Centre in Calgary. During a rather forgettable summer, weather wise, it was a pleasure to greet this day with the prospect of sunny skies & a temperature in the low twenties! The day before was rainy & cool, which may have influenced some people’s decision whether to attend or not. Regardless, we registered 150 great looking Mopar vehicles on this Saturday, which was a few more than we ever recorded at this venue. Parking on the grass is a nice reprieve from parking lot shows on sweltering pavement! Many are saying this was our best show ever & I would have to agree with that!
I would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers who looked after parking, registration, judging etc. Also, kudos to our generous sponsors who helped provide over sixty plaques & trophies & many great door prizes that were welcomed by the winners. Special mention to Ian Herring & John Barrett who filled in so admirably for head judge Neale Felske. Well done guys! Heather Herring & Marlene Mollerson deserve special thanks also for revamping the computer program, enabling everything to proceed smoothly & finish on time! Bill Knecht was outstanding as our announcer once again.
This show was special in another regard, as we remembered Troy Simonsen, the former Chrysler engineer & friend of Northern Mopars, who passed away on May 15thof this year. (Troy attended our 2015 show & blessed us with all the knowledge he accumulated while with Chrysler). He was instrumental in the development of the 426 hemi engine, the L’il Red Express Truck, the Cummings turbo diesel in a Dodge pickup and was a member of the High & Mighty, Ramchargers and Golden Commandos drag racing teams. Troy is a member of the American Drag Racing Hall of Fame! The Judge’s Choice Best of Show Award, won by Tony William’s beautiful Chrysler 300B, honoured Troy with a special acrylic trophy, dedicated to his memory! Thanks Rick Higdon & I.V.R.
Approximately fifteen Northern Mopars members attended the first Western Mopar Madness show & drag races hosted by the Edmonton Mopar Association on July 27that the Castrol Raceway near Edmonton. 400 Mopars were registered on that Saturday, which began with excellent weather but deteriorated into wind & heavy rain halfway through the day, shutting down the drags & basically the large car show. It was a great undertaking by the Edmonton group, which hopefully receives better weather next year!
A list of all the award winners is included in this show edition newsletter. We will also send out a copy to all non-Northern Mopars winners. You can join up if you so desire. See you next year for our 31stannual, same place on Saturday, August 15th, 2020. Let’s make the 2020 show even bigger & better!
